New Year's Eve-Are you thinking RESOLUTION?

Today is just like any other day...
Coffee, planning for the next sewing season...
Customer scheduled alterations this morning.
Fabric sorting and cutting this afternoon.  ..
On the computer several times...
Check email, social sites, and a little "window shopping"...
Typical day...
But today is the eve of another new year...
Can't seem to stop thinking about this next year and why I need to start making the days count.
I want to make resolutions...
I feel like I'm half way there, and taking on a whole new look at life...  (That sounded really cliche, didn't it?)
Through this blog I hope to bring you encouragement, motivation, inspiration, and sharing, throughout the upcoming 2011 year...
May you have much success and happiness in the days to come!
HAPPY NEW YEAR blogger friends!

Request for On-line Handmade Crafts/Artists Businesses!

-This blog post has been copied and pasted in part, from last year, updated, and slightly revised!-
Thank you all so much for joining, reading, commenting and participating on my blog! I appreciate every one of you. I wish you all a very Happy New Year with many blessings and much success!

I would love to feature several small businesses on this blog over this next year. In return, I'm hoping these business owners will provide the blog world with usefull and motivational material to help encourage others in their businesses and lives as well. My mission is to help bring more awareness to the hand made movement and small businesses who are trying to succeed in today's economy. I hope to accomplish this by linking websites, blogs, tweets, or facebook pages to the cyber public in order to help boost sales and build credibility. While I do believe in the importance of world trade, I also believe in supporting our own economy and citizens too!
If you're a small business and have something you would like to contribute, please leave me a comment or email me! (address in comments section)  Short tutorials, how-to projects, business tips, interesting stories or facts, recipes, give aways,...etc., are some of the things I would like to blog about.  I plan to feature a different business every week and you will be my GUEST BLOGGER!

Monday after Christmas-Work or Not?

Monday after Christmas.  What to do.  I really should be working, but thinking about taking the rest of the week off!  You know, look for some good Holiday Sales and spend time with my cheer-daughter.  Maybe take in a good movie. It won't be long 'til she's out of the nest, so I need to make these days count!  My 23 year old man-child (as I used to refer to him-but no longer, as he really did not like it when I called him that!), moved out a couple of months ago.  People ask if I miss him.  Why?  He just moved across the road and comes over every night for dinner! LOL!
 Kidding aside, I love my family and I've loved the Holidays so far!
As you can see by the photo full of caffeine and flavored creamers, I'm gearing up for a good work week when I do go back to work!
(Gifts from friends and family who know what I like!)

Sunday's Cup of Inspiration

It snowed! YES! It snowed here in Sweet Home Alabama!
My 23 year old son said it was because
he prayed for a white Christmas.
I told him people pray for that every year.
He just looked at me with a big smile
and winked as if he knew something I didn't.
I think that's what made Christmas for me.

 "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things,
which thou knowest not."  Jeremiah 33:3

Merry Christmas!

Wishing you and yours, a very Merry Christmas!

"And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."
-St. Luke 2: 13,14 KJV

Christmas Eve!!!

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

"You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes..."

My daughter, along with her boyfriend and a live baby, played Mary and Joseph in our church Christmas play.  My son, who participated and was one of the Wise Men,  thought the baby was just a doll. And of course being the comedian he is, had the thought of acting like he was going to take the babe out of her arms before the play began. He realized rather quickly, and to his surprise, baby Jesus was one of our church member's sleeping baby!
During the play the baby was very still and barely even squirmed when my daughter read her lines, which were hidden under the swaddling clothes. We will chuckle about this for a long time.

"And she brought forth her first-born son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them:  and they were sore afraid.  And the angel said unto them Fear not:  for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord."
St. Luke 2:9-11 KJV

Your Sunday Cup of Inspiration

I love the saying, "Life Is Good"...'cause you know what? It really is.  A very special friend of mine used to tell me (even when I cried on their shoulder), "Life is Good".  I always believed them.  It was elating when I discovered a T-shirt with this quote, and an extremely sentimental find for me!  I have a collection of "Life is Good" tees now!  I used to begin or end my status posts on facebook with "You know what? Life is Good". I never knew there was a huge business based on that quote that two brothers began several years back. Guess I'm a little behind on some things! I found their site a few weeks ago and now I'm a fan on facebook, and I love their products and the charities they support!  Cuddos to them!
I bought this mug! And you all know I LOVE coffee mugs!  Have a great week blogger and bloggette friends, and you know what? "Life IS Good!"

An Interview with Chigger Hill Cottage

So many crafters being interviewed, yet no one has pounded my “door” to interview me! What? I thought I was the one with the best made, cutest, and most unique products on the market! After all, I hand-make and design little girls clothing and accessories. You mean there are more than one of us in this line of creativity?...OK, you guys know I'm kidding, but I had to fill today's space with something! LOL!

Years ago when European immigrants sailed to our country during the Industrial Revolution, their home businesses were called “cottage industries”. I am crazy about history as is reflected in my business name and in the style of clothing I make. The word “Industry” was formerly used in my business name, thus having been called “Chigger Hill Cottage Industry”. In the past I wanted to appear a huge company, and I believed the name sounded big. However, this name, although nostalgically born, did not seem to really fit who and what I was all about.  After re-inventing, re-vamping, re-thinking, re-birthing...(you get the picture) myself over the last year and a half, I simply left off the “Industry” and ordered new labels humbly boasting (Can you do that? Humbly boast?) CHIGGER HILL COTTAGE. Ta da!!!  It SEW fit who I was!
*************************************************************
*So where did you get that name - Chigger Hill Cottage?
   -Back when the local church was being built somewhere in the early 1900’s and our community was being populated, the newly formed congregation sat on log pews outside. The mother’s began to notice an outbreak of chigger bites (“Chigger-Bytes”-my blog-did you catch that?) among the church children! Word got around and soon our neck of the woods, which really is set high on a hill, became known as “Chigger Hill”.
*You hand make and design all the little girls clothing in your shop?
   -Yes, I sew and design each dress or outfit, using my patterns and normally do not duplicate an outfit, unless it is a pillowcase dress. I feel that pillowcase dresses are pretty much universal and I provide a tutorial for making these as well. I use only 100% quality cotton fabric. I pre-wash, soak vivid colors in salt and/or vinegar, and dry all fabrics so the outfit comes out looking the way it was when purchased. (I can’t always guarantee that, but I sure as heck TRY!) Nothing is more disappointing than to wash an outfit and it not look the same as when purchased.
*Why do you use only 100% Cotton in your garments?
   -My husband is a welder, and only wears cotton for safety reasons, so it only made sense to me to use in children’s clothing.  (FYI-I do not make sleepwear)
*How would you describe the style of clothing you sew?
   -I consider my style retro classic adding a little vintage mixed in with simple elegance. My favorite is the classic party dress with the puff sleeves and tie sash in back. I wore these and loved them when I was a little girl! These dresses never go out of style and can be passed down and worn again.  Little girls love to spin around in their dresses!
*Why would customers buy from you? What is special or unique about your things?
   -I think I answered that in the above questions! I try to go the extra mile to give my customers great service and a great product. My dresses can go from Sunday School to Sunday dinner and then out to play!

Currently I am in the process of sewing Spring things! I hope you will visit my Etsy Shop after the first of the year for a new "batch" of little girls dresses, outfits, and accessories!

Thanks for indulging me! -Rhonda

Tuesday Sewing Tip-Embellish with Machine Embroidered Scallops

Sharing one of my favorite embellishments - creating a machine embroidered scalloped edging. Although not always completed quickly, it is worth spending a little more time on to make your item SEW unique! (Especially if your sewing machine has this feature-You should definitley be utilizing it!)
First, decide where you want the scallops: A collar, sleeve, hem? If you sew home decor, you could even add this scalloped trim to pillows and shams.
For sleeves and collars, I cut out, stabilize, and then machine embroider scalloped design to pattern piece where desired. (IMPORTANT: Always make sure you sew a test run before beginning!) Use a close stitch setting, making sure the bobbin and needle tension is correct.
When design is complete, add Fraycheck just outside the scallops, but close enough that the liquid soaks up against the stitches. If you put Fraycheck on top of stitching, it could dull the thread shine.
Let Fraycheck dry then trim with very sharp, precise embroidery scissors, just against the stitched scallops, being very careful not to cut any threads.

There you have it! Your own unique design!
If you visit my Etsy Shop, you will see this feature in several of the little girls dresses I create.
QUICK TIP: Sometimes I create yards at a time of decorative edging.  When I need a special trim for an outfit, I usually have it on hand without having to run out and purchase!

From Trash to Treasure-Gift Box Idea

Here's a "Trash to Treasure" gift box idea I posted last year!
I'll be making this one again, so I thought why not re-post!
For this project I’ve used a large coffee creamer container.
Ice Cream containers work well too!
Gather your supplies, you won’t need many, think of a design, and start creating! Cover with fabric, left over wallpaper, gift wrap, or even spray paint!
Use your imagination! Creativity is a wonderful stress reliever this time of year too!
Here I’ve created a re-usable gift box. Hair bows fit perfectly stacked inside! Socks, candy, a rolled up sweatshirt, …you get the picture!
If you have a creative "Trash to Treasure" Holiday idea you would like to share, please email me! I would love to hear!

Tuesday's Quick Sewing Tip

I use button closures on every outfit I make, except for pillow case dresses.  However, each outfit closure requires a bit of stabilizer underneath to provide some added strength for button hole stress. I cut lots of strips of stabilizer at the beginning of a work project so I can easily reach for it as needed!

A Southern Recipe- Lemon Blueberry Bread Pudding

For the intermediate cook only! And that's because I can't tell you how much of any certain ingredient (except eggs) goes into it! Like my grandmother used to say, "A little bit o this, and a little bit o that".

This is a southern bread pudding (made with real bread y'all) with blueberries and a lemon sauce on top.  Hence the name: Lemon Blueberry Bread Pudding!
Ingredients:
Bread-about 3/4 of a loaf of bread (left-over biscuits can be added too)
Eggs-2
Milk-enough to make a little thicker than cake batter and just ever so thin enough to use with a mixer-did that make sense?
Vanilla Flavoring-about a teaspoon
Nutmeg-a smidgen or two
Cinnamon-a little more than a few dashes-more like a teaspoon or so
Salt-a couple of dashes
Blueberries-how ever many you want! Just kiddin, I used about a cup
Sugar-not really sure, but start with a cup in the mixture and taste to your taste! Get it? Taste to your taste?  You'll need to keep the sugar canister on the counter, 'cause you're gonna need it for the lemon sauce
Lemons-I use fresh, but guess you could use bottled! Set aside for the sauce
Butter-a tad
Water-a little bit
Pre-heat oven to about 400 degrees

OK, to get this party started, you'll need a big bowl.  A real big bowl.  Can you hear my southern drawl yet? No, I don't sound quiet like Paula Dean, although I am a fan.  Mix up bread by tearing in small parts, then add the milk to get a wet mixture you can work with (a little bit thicker than cake batter).  Add eggs, salt, and spices. Mix well. Then gently fold in blueberries and pour into greased casserole pan or dish. (Have plan "B" in case you've made more than expected, but start out with about a 4"x13" pan-this should do it) Bake for about 45-55 minutes or until it looks golden brown over top and around edges. If you take it out of the over and you can still stir it in the middle-it's not done! Put it back!
While the pudding is baking, start getting your ingredients ready for the lemon sauce. I use a skillet to "fix" mine in.  Start out with about a cup and a half of sugar. Pour enough water in it to make wet and stirable with a spoon. (A teflon skillet and wooden spoon work best!) Bring mixture to a boil for about 3-4 minutes, or until sauce texture.  Add a tad (maybe a tsp) of butter, stir until melted, then squeeze in a whole lemon! Watch out for the seeds!  When the pudding is done and is still hot, pour your lemon sauce on top. Voila! Mmmmm good!  If you have any questions about this recipe, email me! But don't ask me about calories, carbs, sodium, etc...'cause I wouldn't have a clue!  I only make this recipe about once a year! But you can leave out the blueberries and lemon sauce if a plain bread pudding sounds better, and I
then I would add raisins instead.

Sunday's Cup of Inspiration

How do you discover your sense of divine destiny?  It's not complicated.  Your destiny has to do with what excites you.  What are you passionate about?  What do you really love doing?  Your destiny will be a part of the dreams and desires that are in your heart; part of your very nature.  Because God made you and He is the One who put those desires within you in the first place, it shouldn't surprise you that your destiny will involve something that you enjoy. -Joel Osteen
